Roosevelt ‘Black Rose’ Taylor is a dynamic, versatile, and highly skilled master painter with full command of his craft. Born, raised, and currently residing in Harlem, New York, Black Rose has been developing, defining, and perfecting his craft since he was a child. The diversity of his work is evidenced in the various ways he tailors his creations to meet his client’s needs. Black Rose’s customized commissioned masterpieces are visible throughout Harlem and prominently displayed as permanent features in popular and historical landmarks across New York City. His work has also been shown in various gallery exhibitions, acquired by private collectors, and displayed across various venues. He has been recognized for the meticulous way he captures the essence and aura of the subjects he paints.

Black Rose is widely recognized, and highly regarded, as a member of the “new” Harlem Renaissance. He is a reputable master painter whose work makes a significant contribution to the renewed cultural richness of contemporary Harlem. As a testament to his dedication to the rebirth of his hometown, Black Rose designed and created a work of art as a gift for the legendary clothing designer, Dapper Dan. The innovative portrait was presented to honor Dapper Dan’s collaboration with the fashion house Gucci. Black Rose’s work has been featured on Good Morning America, in a documentary titled Dear New York, and in two major cable network shows: Run the World (featured on STARZ) and Harlem (featured on Prime Video). In addition to being an extraordinary master painter, Black Rose’s talent transcends as he is also a singer and songwriter currently working on his latest recording project.

“From the renaissance of Harlem to the new history shall be told by my art.”

Roosevelt Taylor, Admiration, 2011, Acrylic and Colored Pencil

The meaning of my work is to always give a story or so much detail you will find something new in the painting each time. I come from a childhood of full exposure to the arts. Art is in my DNA as my mother was artistic and extremely talented. I have always been and will continue to be motivated to teach art to children and adults. My artistic expression comes from the old stories of Harlem about structures that no longer exist. My artistic technique is about light, color, and the details of multiple mediums to create one-of-a-kind paintings. There are no prints. I believe that no matter how much one pays, the painting should be original.
