In each mistake lies a hidden gem. In every success, a new horizon. The creative journey is a masterpiece in progress, an ever-evolving landscape of trials, triumphs, and transformation. For all you dreamers and doers, it’s crucial to understand that the road to artistic fulfillment isn’t a straight line but a winding path full of unexpected detours and delightful discoveries.
Let’s talk about redirection. When your initial plan goes awry, it can feel like the end of the world. But often, it’s just the beginning of a new and exciting chapter. That detour might lead you to uncharted territories where your true potential lies. Embrace these moments as opportunities to explore new horizons and uncover hidden gems within yourself.
One of the most vital lessons in the creative process is persistence. How many times have we heard stories of great artists who didn’t succeed on their first try? Or their second? Or even their tenth? The truth is, each seeming failure is a stepping stone, not a stumbling block. It’s easy to get disheartened when your efforts don’t yield immediate results, but giving up too soon means you might miss out on discovering something extraordinary. Keep going, keep creating, and let each setback strengthen your resolve.
Visual artist Rochelle Dickerson shares one of the most unexpected challenges of her artistic career and her ability to overcome:
The challenge for me has been comparing myself and my growth to other artists on social media. I didn’t expect it to affect me as much as it did in the last couple of years, so I’ve had to find creative ways to overcome that. I’ve since realized that even though it doesn’t have to be my main focus, social media is something that I should continue to embrace as a way to grow my career, get inspired, and meet other artists. Some of the greatest and most unexpected opportunities I’ve had as an artist came from social media, and I would have never gotten them if I had given up on it. Even though sometimes it seems like the easiest thing to do is step away from social media, it may actually end up being the hardest. Read the full interview with Rochelle in BAM! Vol. 3 Issue 2 >
Now, let’s address those pesky mental traps that often follow a perceived failure. The self-doubt, the frustration, the temptation to throw in the towel—these are common feelings that can derail your progress. The trick is to reframe your mindset. Mistakes are not failures; they are valuable learning experiences. When you hit a roadblock, instead of asking, “Why did I fail?” ask, “What can I learn from this?” This shift in perspective can transform obstacles into opportunities for growth.
Mistakes are inevitable, but they are far from insurmountable. Think of every misstep as a puzzle piece that doesn’t quite fit—yet. With a bit of patience and creativity, you can often find a way to incorporate that piece into your larger vision. Sometimes, the most unexpected errors lead to the most innovative solutions. Don’t shy away from your mistakes; embrace them, examine them, and use them to propel your work forward. After all, some of the most beautiful creations are born from what initially seemed like blunders.
Visual artist Ashley Smith emphasizes the important of taking risks and and embracing uncertainty during the creative process:
I wish I had known that it is okay to make art that is rough and uncertain. It’s okay not to have much of a message and to just take risks. Back in 2014, I thought I needed to become this extremely successful artist, so I focused on trends and I allowed perfectionism to drive my work ethic and creative process. However, that was only blocking my creativity and natural evolution as an artist. After 10 years, I am just now allowing myself to mess up and take risks with my work. I’ve been buying canvases that are bigger than I’m comfortable with and going in without much of an idea. I really wish I had done this sooner, but I recently saw a post on social media that said, “It’s never too late to become who you might have been,” and that was just so inspiring! That’s the time I’m on right now. Read the full interview with Ashley in BAM! Vol. 3 Issue 2 >
