The museum presents a month-long celebration of Black art, history, and culture through exhibitions, discussions, and community events.
The African American Museum, Dallas, is pulling out all the stops for Black History Month 2025, offering a packed lineup of exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events that celebrate the rich history and creativity of African Americans. From thought-provoking art exhibitions to dynamic panel discussions and a prestigious sports hall of fame induction, the museum is ensuring that history, heritage, and artistry take center stage.
“While we celebrate Black history year-round, February provides a special moment for reflection, education, and connection,” said Margie Reese, the museum’s interim director. “Our goal is to offer experiences that inspire a deeper understanding of the stories that continue to shape our collective future.”
Starting January 31, visitors can immerse themselves in two major exhibitions:
• 28th Biennial Carroll Harris Simms National Black Art Competition and Exhibition – This prestigious juried showcase highlights compelling works from Black artists nationwide, providing a platform for both emerging and established talents.
• Clay, Grasses, and Reeds – A deep dive into the ancient traditions of African pottery and basketry, this exhibition explores how these art forms continue to influence contemporary design and function.
Additionally, the museum, in collaboration with Broadway Dallas, presents “From Africa to the Broadway Stage: Disney’s The Lion King,” an exhibit that reveals how African artistic traditions have shaped one of the most visually stunning productions in theater history. Featuring masks and puppets from the original Broadway production alongside African artifacts, this exhibition runs through July 3.
A series of special events throughout February will engage the community through discussion, competition, and literary celebration:
• “What Happens When a Dream Isn’t Deferred: A Conversation About Boys and Men” (Feb. 1) – A powerful panel discussion and poetry event exploring Black male identity, moderated by Patrick M. Oliver.
• Know Your Heritage Bowl (Feb. 8) – A thrilling history competition where middle and high school students test their knowledge of African American history for prizes, including an all-expense-paid trip to Memphis.
• African American Read-In (Feb. 15) – A celebration of Black literature featuring live readings, poetry, book discussions, and opportunities to meet authors.
The Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame (TBSHOF) Weekend (Feb. 28 – March 1) will celebrate its 29th year of recognizing the achievements of African American athletes who have made a lasting impact on sports. This year’s inductees include football stars LaDainian Tomlinson and Larry Brown, Olympian Michelle Carter, and rodeo legend Harold Cash.
Beyond Black History Month, the museum offers permanent exhibitions that provide an in-depth look at African American cultural history:
• “The Souls of Black Folks – Imagination and Materiality” – A showcase of Black folk art, including historic textiles, pottery, and furniture.
• “Facing the Rising Sun: Freedman’s Cemetery” – A poignant look at the history of Freedman’s Town, one of Dallas’ earliest Black communities.
Located in Dallas’ historic Fair Park, the African American Museum is free and open to the public, welcoming visitors Tuesdays through Saturdays. For a full schedule of events, visit aamdallas.org.
