Meet Temple Douglass

Temple Douglass is a 20-year-old artist from Columbus, Georgia. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Georgia. Temple’s interest in art was noticed and nurtured from an early age and becoming a working artist has been her goal since she was very young. Temple is greatly inspired by contemporary yet imaginative realists like Chloe Wise and Jurell Cayetano. She works most often with charcoal and toned paper on pieces that explore themes of everyday life experiences and femininity, along with illustrations of the creative process. This lends itself to unique and relatable portraits and scenes.

Douglass makes drawings with varied media that take daily life and people as subject matter. Douglass touches on various overlapping themes and strategies. Several reoccurring subject matter can be recognized such as the relation with popular culture and media, the many facets of Black femininity, and the exploration of her own image, ideas, and actions. Her work often refers to pop and mass culture using music, TV, and fashion references to celebrate aspects of Black femininity and explore complex ideas like misogynoir in creative and simplified ways. She is also very informed by her own experiences and seeks to create introspective, metaphysical, and memory-based imagery of herself and others she is close to.
