British-born Audrey Beharie-McGee is a self-taught emerging fine artist and photographer who now resides in Atlanta, Georgia and London, UK. Audrey is married to storyboard artist and fine artist, Brian McGee. She is also a singer, songwriter, and vocal coach.

In 1988, whilst working for avid art collectors, Sir Paul McCartney and the late Linda McCartney at their offices in London, Audrey developed an appreciation for the fine arts. She was able to come face-to-face with some of the world’s most prolific abstract, pop, and impressionist artists of our time. She became intimately familiar with the neo-impressionism of Vincent Van Gogh, was particularly touched by the psychedelic canvas works of Peter Max, and was enthralled by the pop, collage, and abstract artwork of Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jackson Pollock. Audrey’s eyes, soul, and spirit were able to experience the full impact and energy of these incredible artists, their works, and the intricate interweaving of paint, colors, fabrication, media, and elements that brought these canvases to life!

Unfortunately, in 2015 Audrey was diagnosed with Hashimotos, an auto-immune condition which, sadly, resulted in a host of debilitating health conditions including the deterioration of her vocal cords, hampering her ability to sing. This was a devastating blow to Audrey, especially affecting her creative spirit. However, whilst on a cruise, Audrey and Brian were invited to attend an art gallery event. She immediately, felt that long-lost fire in her spirit rekindled as she re-discovered her love, excitement and appreciation for art! GOD had opened up another door for her which is full of endless possibilities!

On her return to Georgia, Audrey wasted no time immersing herself in her new love. She began in earnest to study and embrace the works of her favorite artists. On her journey, she discovered the incredible talents of many Black artists such as Rashid Johnson, Howardena Pindell, Mark Bradford, David Driskell, Janet Henry, Kehinde Wiley, Charles Alston, Jacob Lawrence, and of course, the late great Jean Michel Basquiat who have fueled the flame. She became increasingly fascinated by the way in which these artists would create their works with such uninhibited freedom.

With intense hues, varied tones and organic materials, Audrey feels that every scrape of a palette knife, splat of splashed paint, tear of paper, and dab of acrylic or watercolor allows her imagination to soar and run free. By integrating her photography work with her mixed media art, Audrey is driven by her passion to explore new forms of expression.

Through the creation of visual art, Audrey has found territory similar to composing a well-crafted song that expresses all the integral facets of superb lyrics, well-crafted instrumentation, subtle melody, sultry harmonies, and cadence in concert to create BEAUTY!

Audrey has shown her work in London, UK, Atlanta, USA, Venice and Rome, Italy and has also had a residency at the celebrated Rossocinabro Gallery in Rome, Italy.

My work is a cultivation of an artistic vision that combines various influences and techniques to explore profound themes.

I draw inspiration from diverse art movements like pop art, abstract, neo-impressionism, collage, geometry and cubism, while also capturing the tranquility or chaos within my photography. These factors help to reflect a deep appreciation for both human creativity and the natural environment. This juxtaposition creates a dynamic tension thus enhancing its ability to evoke emotional responses and spark meaningful dialogue.

My creative process—from spontaneous gestures evolving into structured compositions, with each layer revealing nuanced meanings—hints at a thoughtful and deliberate approach to my own style of art-making and allows for a depth of exploration that encourages viewers to engage on multiple levels, discovering new insights upon closer examination.

I would like to feel that my art serves as a bridge between personal experiences, reflections, and universal themes, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own lives thus creating a powerful way to express the intricate tapestry of human experience and behavior and our profound relationship with the environment through my art.

Read our interview below to get a glimpse into Audrey Beharie-McGee’s creative journey.

Your work combines photography and painting to create stunning images. How did you discover this technique? Did your interest in photography or painting come first?

My artistic journey, encapsulated in “SOULISM – The Human Experience – A Journey Through Fine Art and Photography,” is multifaceted. It is a way in which I wish to integrate photography, mixed media, collage, and abstract art to explore the depths of human experience is both innovative, spiritual and deeply expressive.

My interest in photography came first, followed by my increasing passion for fine art.

The first rung of the ladder starts with the creation of artwork pieces ranging from abstract, collage or mixed media painting.  These provide the backdrop to what will soon become “SOULISM.”

My next step is the photographic element of the creation.  My approach to working with my photographic models, many of whom are my vocal and performing arts students and good friends, speaks volumes about the importance of the intimate and supportive environment I wish to create and foster. This is vitally intrinsic to the entire process so I am very selective with the “energy” of the person that I am shooting.  Collaborating closely with my husband as a “double act” ensures that each photo session is not only productive but also a nurturing, comfortable, and uplifting experience for the models involved.

The emotional journey that I guide my models through during these sessions by extracting a range of intense emotions like anger, sadness, and grief to ecstasy, joy, and love is both challenging and transformative. The process can be grueling yet many of the models find the experience extremely rewarding, giving them one of the rare opportunities to express, emote, act out and release pent-up emotions, leading to a sense of accomplishment and catharsis.

My meticulous approach to selecting and combining photographs with art to create a hybridized synergic artwork highlights the deliberate nature of my artistic process. Each piece becomes a unique exploration of identity and emotion, capturing the essence of the human soul in a visually compelling way.

Through my art collection “SOULISM” and my fine art collections and themes, I would not only love to be able to showcase my artistic techniques but also to invite viewers to contemplate new perspectives and connections within the realm of human emotions and experiences. I use this fusion of art forms to demonstrate my wish to be versatile in my artistic approach and my yearning and commitment to exploring the complexity and beauty of the human spirit.

As I continue to evolve and refine my artistic vision, my hope is that I will continue to inspire and resonate with audiences, offering them profound insights into the human condition and the power of artistic expression.

What is your process for selecting the patterns and colors that comprise your collages? Do you look for specific textures or materials to establish the mood for each piece?

It is my hope that my process of experimentation and self-discovery not only enriches my work but also helps me allow my artwork to be imbued with a depth of inspiration and storytelling.

I believe that being self-taught has had its advantages in allowing me to immerse myself in a perpetual state of exploration and creativity. I would describe my artistic journey as a continuous “play mode,” where I delight in experimenting with a wide array of textures, substrates, mediums, and techniques. This freedom from formal constraints or protocols enables me to learn through trial and error, embracing “happy mistakes” and discoveries alike as integral parts of my artistic growth.

My approach to collage art is both systematic and expressive, starting with a foundation of subdued-colored collage paper that transforms my canvas or substrate into a canvas for creativity. I then add poignant Bible scriptures that resonate with the energy that I am feeling on every substrate, thus giving honor to The Creator who is my strength and wisdom.  This initial layer sets the tone and direction for the piece, with its inherent colors, patterns, and movement guiding the subsequent stages of creation.

Central to my process is the incorporation of ethnic patterns or imagery alongside music sheets and notes, imbuing my work with cultural richness and a musical dimension. This blend of elements not only adds visual interest but also contributes to the thematic depth of my compositions.

Building upon this layered foundation, I wish to further develop and nurture my skills as an artist.  With the application of acrylic paints, stenciling, ink sprays, and oil pastels my goal is to add mediums that inject life, texture, and energy into the piece, allowing me to explore the interplay of colors and forms in a dynamic and organic manner.

When I combine my collage techniques with the spontaneity of mixed media, I feel that my artwork evolves into vibrant expressions that reflect my personality, approach to composition, and intuitive exploration of artistic possibilities. This process not only shapes the aesthetic qualities of my pieces but also invites viewers to engage with the layers of meaning and emotion embedded within each creation.

Because my initial education as an artist is eclectic and deeply rooted in studying and immersing myself in a diverse selection of artistic masters from different styles and periods,  I was able to draw inspiration from a rich tapestry of influences, ranging from the bold abstractions of artists like Mark Rothko, Piet Mondrian, and Picasso, to the vibrant narratives found in the works of Peter Max, Diego Rivera, and Frida Kahlo.

However, during my journey to enlightenment, I was able to discover an incredible array of acclaimed Black artists such as Mark Bradford, Rashid Johnson, Howardena Pindell, David Driskell, Kehinde Wiley, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Jacob Lawrence. I am finding myself being drawn and influenced more profoundly by their unique, cultural, powerful dynamic blends of colors, forms, and unique applications of patterns and fabrications.

Each of these artists contributes to my evolving artistic vision and technique. Their diverse perspectives and innovative approaches allow me to have a better understanding of composition, color theory, and expressive possibilities. By synthesizing these influences, I hope that I am able to create artwork that resonates on multiple levels, reflecting my personal journey of discovery and growth as an artist.

What is your favorite part of the creation process?

My favorite part of the creative process is deeply rooted in a spiritual and serene atmosphere. I begin by immersing myself in a space of tranquility and positive energy, setting the stage for my artistic journey. As a musician, music plays a significant role in my process, and I love to locate my favorite YouTube playlists of Bible-centric scriptures, gospel, jazz, old RnB, or classical music as sources of inspiration, relaxation and channeling my creativity.

My artistic practice is my belief in being guided by THE ALMIGHTY CREATOR YAHWEH. Having never attended art college and with no formal training, I attribute with great humility my wisdom, knowledge, and inspiration to this divine source, acknowledging that my creative accomplishments can only be a result of my GOD-given gift. This spiritual connection permeates my work with a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

There are moments in my artistic journey when I complete a piece and marvel at its creation, often feeling astonished at how I managed to achieve such work at all!  In these instances, I find solace in the scripture from Philippians 4:13: “I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me.” This verse resonates and so profoundly underscores my belief that my creative vision is part of a greater plan, leading me to feelings of contentment and elation upon completing a piece.

My approach highlights the intersection of faith and creativity, where my artistic expressions become a testament to my spiritual journey and the profound influence of my beliefs. My openness to divine inspiration and my willingness to embrace uncertainty in the creative process result in artworks that resonate deeply, both with myself and, hopefully, with those who experience my work.

What range of emotions do you experience when creating art?

The excitement and anticipation I feel each time I enter my studio to embark on a new piece illustrates the joy and freedom I find in the creative process.

However, at the outset, order and preparation is key to my creativity.  Striving for perfection within my space is always problematic.  If my space is in any way in disorder, then the cleaning ritual must commence!  My husband would call it a case of “manic OCD” but I just call it “AUDREYISM.”  Everything has to be in its place.  The failure of these “protocols” can leave me in a state of anxiety and be counter-productive to my creativity by taking valuable energy and focus away from my actual creative process.  My need for order, control, and organization is paramount, and sadly, one of my weaknesses that needs serious attention and needs to be conquered. However, once everything is in its rightful order then I am finally in my happy place.

Using intense hues, varied tones, color palettes, and organic materials to express my imagination reveals a sense of liberation and creative abandon, where each stroke of paint or tear of paper allows my creativity to soar.

In my opinion, everyone should have a happy place—somewhere they feel uninhibited to be who GOD created them to be. My happy place is when I am creating a new piece of art! I experience a profound giddiness and connection to my art and the source of my inspiration, which I attribute to my faith and belief in YAHWEH.

My awe and gratitude for the beauty of humanity and the Earth emphasize the importance of not taking for granted the opportunity to create meaningful art that resonates with others. My passion for art and the depth of connection allow me to be guided and inspired on my artistic journey, infusing my work with a profound sense of happiness, meaning, and purpose.

My emotional journey through art, influenced by the aforementioned established artists who have helped to shape my creativity, highlights the powerful impact of artistic inspiration and their mentorship.

Being a songwriter, I feel that my exploration within the realms of my fine art creation as a medium for artistic expression mirrors the process of crafting a song, where every element—from texture and color to spirit and emotion—blends harmoniously to create beauty! This approach helps me to connect and learn a deeper sense of understanding of how different elements can come together to evoke powerful emotions and narratives.

Both you and your husband are in the creative space. What has this experience been like and how do you support each other?

The relationship with my husband, Brian, and the collaborative dynamic we’ve cultivated over our years together is truly inspiring!

We met in 2010 and, at that time, Brian was working as an illustrator for Turner’s Cartoon Network. From the get-go realized we had so much in common, especially on the music and composition front. So, in 2012 we founded B.R.E Productions International, Inc. which became the umbrella company for all of our creative endeavors.

My primary role within the co mpany is to source TV and film projects in Georgia and make contacts. In return, Brian supports and helps me with all of my additional projects including my vocation as a vocal and performing coach, event management, and my career as a fine artist.

Brian’s extensive experience as a professional artist spanning over three decades brings invaluable guidance to all of my artistic projects.  Our “push and pull” relationship works perfectly! We work from our home with my art studio and Brian’s offices in the basement.  We keep ourselves to ourselves when working but always stop for lunch, watch a quick movie or something on Netflix, and then get back to the grindstone!  It’s a match made in heaven and highlights our harmonious blend of productivity and personal connection.

Artistically, there is definitely an advantage for me having Brian’s influence and support which give me a sense of confidence.  He is definitely my “number one cheerleader” and this underscores his unwavering encouragement and belief in my abilities. His constructive criticism, coupled with love and support, not only motivates me but also helps me navigate and have a sense of comfortability in various creative endeavors.

There was a point when I began to doubt my ability, but Brian’s encouragement helped me overcome doubts and cultivate confidence in my artistic path.  I constantly hear his voice echoing, “Just pray, play, and enjoy the moment.”  I know it sounds like a spiritual mantra but it does keep me grounded, focused, and inspired.

The pivotal moment when Brian’s encouragement helped me regain confidence in my artistic abilities, leading to the development of my signature style in “SOULISM,” speaks volumes about the impact of his support on my artistic growth and creative expression.

My partnership with Brian exemplifies and beautifully illustrates a synergistic blend of mutual support, shared passion, and deep connection as husband and wife. It’s evident that together, we have created an environment where each of our talents flourishes, contributing to success and fulfillment in both of our creative endeavors. It’s awesome to know that I have someone who has my back!

You were able to rediscover your love for art after receiving a devastating health diagnosis. Can you share your advice for individuals who may experience similar hardships?

My journey through life’s challenges and transformations is incredibly inspiring. Despite facing the devastating blow of Hashimoto’s Disease and the loss of my singing voice as well as other health restraints, my resilience and faith have guided you to new paths filled with creativity and passion.

My background in the performing arts, spanning over four decades, reflects a lifetime dedicated to my lifelong passion for music and creativity. From my early career achievements as a singer/songwriter, recording artist, and production company owner to my vocal and performing arts academy called “Vocal Zones”  where I nurtured, coached and mentored talented individuals who share a love for the performing arts—my world has always been centered on music.

In the late 80s, I was blessed to be able to work for Sir Paul McCartney and the late Linda McCartney who were avid art collectors, and this experience exposed me to some of the world’s most prolific artists of our time.  In this environment, I had the opportunity to be “up close and personal” with works from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Peter Max, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper John, to name just a few. Unbeknown to me, this would set the foundation for my future artistic journey and spark a love, appreciation and career in fine art.

Moving to Georgia in 2009 from London and experiencing health challenges marked a significant turning point.

The slow deterioration of my health eventually led to the diagnosis of Hashimoto’s Disease.  Hashimoto’s is a progressive auto-immune disease that results in a host of debilitating health conditions including abject fatigue and physical exhaustion, pain, muscle weakness and disorder, heart palpitations, compromised immunity, sensitivity to cold and heat and a myriad of other traumatic conditions.

However, one of the most devastating side effects was the loss of my ability to sing.  A hoarse voice is one of the most common symptoms of large thyroid nodules because they protrude and press against the vocal cords.  This not only changed my voice and profoundly affected my ability to sing but also made it difficult to swallow and sometimes breathe properly. As you can imagine, this loss was devastating as singing, performing, and being a part of this wonderful arena of music was the core of my being, identity and joy.

Ever since I was a child, all I can remember is singing into my hairbrush and dancing like my life depended on it. My father recognized this energy in his little girl and encouraged me to be that “happy soul.”  Every Saturday morning, he would take me to the record shop in Deptford, London and allow me to choose the records I liked. I would take them home and play them on the old “radiogram” basking in the music to my little heart’s content.  These were such incredibly special times for me that fashioned my future for all things.

My spiritual renaissance occurred during a cruise ship gallery event. This was the spark that rekindled my fascination with fine art.  On my return to Atlanta, the spare bedroom was then transformed into a small art space in which I started my new artistic journey of exploration with enthusiasm and determination.

My belief in YAHWEH’s guidance and provision through life’s challenges shines through my life’s narrative. Despite the hardships, I’ve found a new lease on life through art, allowing my spirit to flourish once more. This journey not only reflects resilience but also underscores the transformative power of creativity and faith in finding new avenues of fulfillment.

Sometimes it appears that life or THE CREATOR chooses compromises for you as one door may appear to close. However, through everything, I embraced faith and found solace in Ecclesiastes 3: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” I was blessed that, decades later,  another door was opened and I was able to find and rekindle my love for fine art to give me a renewed passion.

I hope that my story is a testament to the ability of the human spirit to overcome adversity and find beauty and purpose in unexpected places. I pray that anyone reading this may be inspired to never give up but be open to what GOD can do for us so we can walk in all of our endeavors and, thus continue to bring you joy, peace, happiness and fulfillment.  I hope that my journey will inspire others facing challenges to discover a new lease of life, passions and endless possibilities.

What do you look forward to most in your art career?

Despite starting actively as an artist in 2021, my enthusiasm and dedication are driving me to explore new techniques and embrace every opportunity to create.

I am optimistic about my future outlook despite starting my artistic career later in life. Even faced with my health condition, my belief in the unfolding possibilities guided by the Universe aligns with a mindset of abundance and positivity.

My hope to bring joy and happiness through my art is a noble ambition, driven by my passion and dedication that we are all blessed with endless possibilities when you have faith!

The analogy of “from small acorns, great oaks grow” beautifully captures my aspirations.  My dream would be to have my art featured in galleries across the world, receive major commissions and be recognized within the art community as a viable and exciting artist!  I know that these goals sound rather ambitious, but, with GOD “all things are possible.”

My willingness to learn, evolve, and experiment reflects a mindset of continuous growth and adaptation. I recognize that as I gain more experience and education as an artist, my style will naturally evolve and mature and possibly never remain the same, but I feel that this is the excitement of being a creative—we can never stand still or stop exploring the cosmos! My journey reminds us all that it’s never too late to pursue our passions and make a meaningful impact.

As I continue on this exciting trajectory, embracing each new experience and opportunity, may my journey as a fine artist be filled with creativity, fulfillment, and the realization of my dreams.
