Jalen Law is a Buffalo-based artist, art educator, and entrepreneur dedicated to supporting emerging artists and youth in the regional arts communities. With a passion for art since the age of four, Law primarily works in drawing and painting, integrating technology and digital arts into his pieces, creating powerful images that address uncomfortable issues. In his artist statement, he emphasizes drawing viewers in, encouraging thought without allowing discomfort to deflect or turn away.

Through The Jalen Law Collection, he offers custom commissioned artwork, serves as a live painter for corporate events and festivals, curates art exhibitions locally and nationally, and presents workshops and lectures. Law aims to use art as a tool for personal development and to create opportunities for emerging artists. His mural painting practice has expanded, starting with a project honoring essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and leading to notable pieces like the Calvin “Pop” Porter mural at the Niagara Falls Heritage Center.

Since 2014, Law has been teaching art to people of all ages, conducting workshops at summer camps, the University at Buffalo Anderson Gallery, and delivering sessions on emotional intelligence to at-risk youth in Erie County through various organizations. Currently, he is developing a research-based art program, the Emotional Intelligence Program, inspired by Yale University president Dr. Peter Salovey’s work on emotional intelligence. Law is presently exhibiting his second solo exhibition, “Unveiled Echoes,” at the University of Syracuse. To learn more about Jalen Law and his impactful work, visit TheJalenLawCollection.com.

In my artistic practice, I approach my role as an objective observer, meticulously absorbing information and translating it into subjective expressions of line and color. My intention is to eliminate personal bias, creating a space for viewers of diverse backgrounds to engage with my work and construct their own interpretations.

Over the past two years, my artistic journey has led me to undertake public art projects for a range of entities, including nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, municipal bodies, and public benefit corporations. These experiences have not only allowed me to hone my craft but have also provided a meaningful platform for exploring innovative approaches to art as a catalyst for profound community connections.

My specific relationship with Buffalo holds a unique place in my artistic exploration. This vibrant city, with its rich history and cultural tapestry, has been a wellspring of inspiration for my work. The dynamic interplay between Buffalo’s historical narratives, diverse communities, and the slowly evolving urban landscape has influenced my attention to details and nuances, translating those skill sets into my art practice.

How do you balance your time and energy while having multiple talents, ambitions, and commitments?

Creating a schedule is essential as it acts as my GPS to measure the distance between where I am and what needs to be executed in order to realize my dreams. Next, regularly reviewing my schedule and commitments to assess what is working well and what needs adjustment is crucial. The cultivation of flexibility and adaptation is important as plans and circumstances change.

What are your most important artistic influences?

My most important artistic influences are structured in a hierarchical manner, with life and the myriad activities of humanity standing at the forefront. Following this primary influence are my family and close associates, whose presence and interactions shape my creative journey profoundly. Further down the hierarchy lie the tertiary influences, encompassing both renowned artists and those lesser-known within the expansive arts industrial complex.

In your journey as an artist, what has been the most unexpected experience, realization, or challenge?

One of the most unexpected experiences in my journey as an artist has been the profound impact my art has had on individuals and communities time and time again. I’ve been immersed in creative exploration since the age of two, and throughout this exploration, whether within gallery walls or classrooms, I’ve come to appreciate the transformative power of art. It has the ability to spark conversations and catalyze change in ways that often exceed my initial expectations.

A particular realization that deeply resonated with me was understanding the potency of art in bridging gaps and fostering understanding among diverse perspectives. Through my work, I found myself connecting with people from various backgrounds, engaging in meaningful dialogues, and witnessing firsthand how art can transcend boundaries, creating bridges where walls once stood.

However, this journey was not devoid of challenges. One of the most significant hurdles I faced was navigating the intersection of art and commerce. Balancing creative integrity with the practicalities of sustaining a career in the arts required a delicate dance. Learning to advocate for the value of my work, negotiate contracts effectively, and navigate the business side of art was a steep learning curve that demanded resilience and adaptability.

How do you define success as an artist?

Success as an artist is defined by the capacity to transform a mental concept into a tangible reality, overcoming challenges encountered throughout the creative process. Furthermore, it encompasses the ability to evoke emotional, intellectual, or spiritual responses from viewers interacting with the artwork.

Another facet of success for me as an artist involves achieving sustainability, enabling financial support through various means such as sales, commissions, grants, or other income sources linked to my artistic endeavors. It signifies not just surviving but thriving as an artist, finding a harmonious balance between creative expression and practical viability.

Do you have any advice for artists who want to share their art with the world, but don’t know where to start?

Begin by acknowledging the inherent value of your unique creative voice. This recognition forms the foundation from which your artistic journey can unfold. Embrace the process of creation, allowing yourself to experiment and grow, even through moments of perceived failure. Each step forward, no matter how small, contributes to your artistic evolution.

Participate actively in art events and exhibitions, immersing yourself in the vibrant tapestry of the artistic community. Understand that the path to success is not linear; it is a journey marked by twists, turns, and unexpected discoveries. Continual education is paramount—immerse yourself in the nuances of your craft and delve into the intricacies of the art business.
